Well, on Thursday, May 11, 2017, we sold the house we’ve lived in for twenty-three years. Feels strange. We’ve moved into our son, Sam, and his wife, Hallie’s house for the time being. I’m so grateful to them for letting us take up a room until we find our next house. Last week, we visited our son, Jake and his wife Jenny’s place in Arvada, Colorado. Jake was three when we moved in. He’s now twenty-six and he and Jenny will celebrate their one-year anniversary in 10 days. Crazy!Had an amazing time, met their little fluffball, Bella, the cutest golden…

The pressure upon left-handed people is that they’re supposed to have a natural-born tendency to be creative, artsy, and have a flair for all those things of which those who favor using the opposite hand do not. We lefties, it’s presumed, should have it easier at a) singing, b) acting or c) speaking another language. Not one to shy away from trying something, I gave them all a go. My only solo came when I was four years old and Mom said I’d been “chosen by our church’s Mother-Daughter Banquet committee” to sing a song. I chose to serenade the women,…
Read MoreINTERVIEW WITH MINNESOTA AUTHOR CONNIE LOUNSBURY AND BOOK GIVEAWAY
I feel somewhat like a mosquito at a beach about expressing all that I loved about this book. I know what to do, but I don’t know where to start to persuade you to read A Hobo’s Wish by Minnesota author Connie Lounsbury. I guess I’ll start with its premise: A description of the book on Amazon states, After a tragic mistake during The Great Depression, Dr. Pete Walters becomes penniless, forced to ride the rails along with thousands of other unemployed men and women, surviving by trading labor for food, or asking for handouts. Will he find the trust and the…

Several weeks ago at the Christian Authors Book Fair in Plymouth, Minn., I ran into Michael Ireland, a British journalist I became acquainted with years ago at the Minnesota Christian Writers Guild. We visited briefly. The next day, he sent me, quite unexpectedly, a host of questions about BlessBack®: Thank Those Who Shaped Your Life, for me to answer as soon as possible as he wanted to do a story with Assist News Service about my book and why I wrote it. I was thrilled at his interest, but crippled by technology. I was in Hill City, South Dakota, visiting my friend…

If you’ve been following my blog, you know that I recently spent some time in Hill City, South Dakota, visiting my friend, Barbara Majchrzak, at her High Country Guest Ranch and doing some writing. Barb mentioned that a writers group she belongs to, the Bear Lodge Writers Group, had its monthly meeting in Sundance, Wyoming this week and wondered if I would be interested in going. Absolutely. Wyoming, a word which originally meant, “at the big river flat,” is so much more that its definition. It’s vast enormous, spacious, yet surprisingly interesting and beautiful. The last time I visited Wyoming…

Several weeks ago, a young woman contacted me via the contact page of my website, https://juliesaffrin.com. She owns a subscription box service, Covet Crate, geared toward professional women, and she wondered if I would be interested in having my book, BlessBack®: Thank Those Who Shaped Your Life, be a part of its November box. I couldn’t have been more surprised, or grateful. All sorts of online subscription box services exist, geared to a person’s preference. Some boxes are beauty and make-up related, others are food or sewing related – there’s even one for DIYers. I subscribe to Stitch Fix, a…

Read MoreTHE WONDER OF A GETTING LOST DAY
Some Sundays, as a child, held what I call magical getting-lost days, ones where my family would go to church, head home to change clothes, then plop in the back seat of our Fury II, and go for a ride. Out of Bloomington, a suburb of Minneapolis, we’d go, far away from the planes that flew hourly over our house near the airport. A meandering family were we, along the Mississippi, River, Lake Pepin, or Chippewa Falls; somehow we always stumbled upon small towns and country roads. I loved being in the car with my favorite people. Loved that Dad welcomed the challenge…
