I loved Gourmet magazine. Loved being taken to different localities around the world and educating myself as to how others lived and ate. The one issue I will not part with is the April 1990 issue. In it, is my most prized of recipes: Key Lime Pie with Almond Crumb Crust. Yes, I like most any kind of Key Lime Pie and will not turn down a graham-cracker crusted one, but if you have the time and especially if you have a food processor, why not take the time to whirl some zweiback toast, blanched almonds, and crush some key…

Cape-Cottage at Sunset by W. B. Glazier
Cape-Cottage at Sunset by William B. Glazier is one of my favorite poems. It is even more achingly beautiful if listened to by Andrew MacMillian, whose poignant, reflective bass voice is as deep as the fathomless sea Glazier writes about. It’s on volume 3 entitled “The Mystic Sea” of The Sea collection if you can get your hands on a copy. According to Native Poets of Maine, published in 1854 and written by S. Herbert Laxcey, Glazier wrote poetry uncommon for his age. He was born on June 29, 1827 in Hallowell, Maine and graduated from Harvard in 1843. Laxcey wrote,…
Read MoreA Bridal Tea
I love being a girl. And I love giving showers. Though I don’t experience playing in the dirt like gardeners do, with giving showers, I experience euphoria as senses converge to create “festivity.” On May 19, 2014, I along with Kathryn Paradise, owner of Salon Spatoria in Victoria, co-hostessed a bridal shower tea for our friend, Mary’s daughter, Alison Harms. Kathryn and I found it especially a joy to give this shower as Alison is getting married on Flag Day, June 14, which is a birthday Kathryn and I both share. Each of us considered having the shower at our…

Read MoreAmaze Yourself
Most people, as young versions of themselves, leave their dancing dreams in front of dresser mirrors. But a handful possess a love and creative ability to tell a story through dexterity, fluidity, and movement. They sense their talent and coax out its perfection. When they perform, their creative beauty loosens our austerity. We, simply by watching the years of discipline and persistence on display, become untethered and look at life from a new direction. By the end of an artist’s performance, we are not the same. We have been changed by the encounter. From our seats, we are forced by the…
Read MoreMarch Madness
I am sick of the color of Minnesota. Much of the state looks like the pond’s rim near here. Grasses, reedy, and six-feet tall. I hate it. I know. I know. Being in an “environmental” mind gets you big marks these days. But I’m going a bit mad. Call it my March madness. Enough of the mud, the taupy browns, rested earth. Besides, the grasses and reeds are dead, anyway. I think they would look better fashioned atop a tiki-hut on a beach, protecting the sunbirds from Minnesota who are currently escaping there. I would so appreciate its being repurposed in this way, especially while sipping on a…

Read MoreA gratitude blessing
Today, March 23, 2014 I’m featured on Hope Church’s guest blog. Here’s the link: http://hope-pc.org/hope-blog The story? My husband’s every-night blessing he gave to our three sons. I hope it encourages other young parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, teachers and mentors to think about doing something like this. Thanks, Rick, for your nightly practice. Excerpt: “Not only did Rick’s blessing realign our belief that God held the infinite power to bless, but also, “the blessing” felt like a cloak of protection, that everything was in God’s hands while we were away from one another.” Have a great day. Julie …
