By having an Etsy store, I have made connections with people whom I would not have otherwise. I’ve also learned the importance of adding tracking with the Postal Service during holiday seasons – particularly in December. Mail going “lost” is very much a reality. With it comes the responsibility I feel as shop owner of juliesaffrinsstuff, to resend people their purchased items with the cost on me. I have no regrets though. I’ve met some lovely people in these interactions. While I added British Christmas cards in 2019, in 2020, I created two new Christmas cards, One in French and…

Today’s guest blog post is from a new friend of mine, Deanna Pavlenko, whom I met through an online writing group called Novel Academy. We are in a small group called a “huddle” with three other women within that organization. We group-text everyday, asking how we can help one another and be in prayer for each other. Deanna heads our group and she does a fantastic job. As we’ve texted back and forth, she’s shared that her family is of Ukrainian descent. Last week, she told us the incredible amount of hours her family invests to make traditional Ukrainian and…
Read MoreHOPE IN AN UPSIDE-DOWN WORLD
Earlier this week, I watched a person give a live devotional with the camera placed in such a way that she appeared upside down. Her message was still excellent and the video was a-righted in time, but the captured moment seemed a perfect metaphor for the world we’re living in now. Upside-down world. A friend in Wisconsin recently posted on her Facebook page: Just so I NEVER forget….. April 2, 2020 Gas price a mile from home was $2.08 School cancelled – yes cancelled Self-distancing measures on the rise. Tape on the floors at grocery stores and others to help…

Upon the hills of Garlingtown Beneath the summer sky, In many pleasant pastures On sunny slopes and high, Their skins abloom with dusty blue, Asleep the berries lie. —Frank Prentice Rand In the Saffrin house this summer of ’18, we’re about five weeks along in following the Keto diet. Some days it’s been harder to live without carbs and sugar than it’s been to slog being outside on a wet humid day. But, we’re doing it. Lots of time, for me at least, spent learning some new recipes. Where would I be without the internet? I’ve found amazing recipes online. Being…
Read MorePEACH TORTE
Lately, I’ve been into making fruit desserts. Not sure why. I think because I love peaches. And I love this Peach Torte with vanilla bean ice cream. I received this Peach Torte recipe from my sweet friend, Ann Seymour. Prepared and baked correctly the Peach Torte is the most fabulous-tasting and easy recipe I make. You’ll be slurping up every last syrupy spoonful of deliciousness. I do use a torte pan – it’s actually a Pampered Chef edged baking stone approximately 11 inches in diameter. But a 9×9 cake pan will work great too. I tried to double this recipe for a…

Today my father, Donald Trewartha, has been gone for 15 years. So this blog post will be a little bit nostalgic and blue. Blue because of Dad’s and my mutual love of our favorite fruit, blueberries, our favorite color, blue, and because of a little wonder that I was a witness to, both on the day my father died and today. My dad was 73 when he passed away. While all who knew him were sad to see him go, all of us hated to see him suffering from Alzheimer’s and knew he was going to Heaven. His last days…
Read MoreA SUMMER EVENING ON DEAD LAKE
2016 marks the tenth year we have owned our cabin on Dead Lake in Ottertail County, Minnesota. When we first bought the place, our three sons, Sam, Joe, and Jake, joked that the reason the lake was called Dead was “because there were no girls on it.” I, too, was surprised the first time we circled the lake. With the exception of a handful of resorts, very little noise or activity was to be seen or heard. Notta one ice cream shop or restaurant to motor up to on this 7,500-acre lake was to be found. The lake, it turns…
